Happy Faithful Friday, friends! Did you take my Mindful Monday challenge and use the middle of this week to replenish and recharge your physical body? Are you well-rested? If not, I totally understand. It’s easy to jump on that hamster wheel and keep spinning. I am guilty of doing it myself. But today AT THE CROSSROADS I want to teach you how to rest for real. I want you to start your journey toward SOUL CARE by giving yourself a break…by resting.
Many of you related to the story of Elijah (1 Kings 18 & 19) and how depleted, despondent, and depressed he felt. I hope you were encouraged to see how God showed up at his lowest point (when he was literally in the MIDDLE of the desert) and responded to him with compassion and mercy by meeting his physical needs. Often, we think we hear God scolding us when we are down…telling us to pray more, go to church, or read our Bibles. But that is not what He does. He created us and knows exactly what we need when we need it. And often what he softly whispers to us in the midst of our chaos is this: Rest, child, just rest.
Even God rested. In Genesis Chapter 2 it says that God worked for six days and on the seventh He rested. He created for six days and then guiltlessly ceased from His work. He was not tired, He did not need a break, He did not run out of energy…so why did He need to rest? I believe He did it to model for us–His finite and frail creation–a pattern. An example of balancing work and rest in a healthy rhythm. He designed our bodies and minds with a need to pause, rest, and reset. Isn’t that amazing?
“Take a rest; a field that has rested gives a bountiful crop”
You might remember that I mentioned finishing the story of Elijah in today’s Faithful Friday post. Guess what? I decided to heed my own advice, take little break, and leave it for next Mindful Monday. I hope you are okay with that! I also thought we might not be finished discussing this concept of taking care of your body before taking care of your soul.
Rest stops are necessary on any journey (especially if you are a huge coffee drinker like me!), but often we blow right by them thinking we can make it to the next one..until we are in the middle of nowhere with an emergency on our hands. Don’t do that to yourself. If you are serious about reaching your destination of SOUL CARE, you need to be just as serious about REST.
I actually began speaking on this topic of rest over 11 years ago (very ironic for those of you who know me well) because it is something I need to be very intentional and purposeful in practicing. I have collected many resources over the years and tried to compile the best for you. Please use them to help you plan and practice rest.
Click on the link below for a free printable on LEARNING HOW TO REST. It is a one sheet guide of practical tips, scripture verses, and recommended reading for those of you who need to take a rest for real.
Again, this link is only available for my email subscribers, so if you are not seeing it, you know what you have to do! On Mindful Monday, we will continue the journey with Elijah. You will be amazed at far he goes and what he is able to do after he takes care of his body and rests.
So rest up, fellow travelers, and get your body ready for the road ahead!
